Historical Restoration
F. S. Barn
Like so many of the timber frame barns that dot the Hudson Valley, this one had endured generations of hard use and stood in serious disrepair — and few of them are fortunate enough to receive a full restoration. Its owners decided this barn deserved one, and they made it a priority that the work honor the building’s craft heritage, using traditional woodworking methods and practices throughout.
The restoration began by gutting the barn back to its core load-bearing timber structure. Compromised beams and posts were replaced with new ones, hand-carved by experts in traditional woodworking techniques and joined in the spirit of the original frame. Around that preserved skeleton, the barn was carefully updated for its next chapter as a guest apartment and a hall for events and gatherings — the hand-worked frame now on full display in a bright, open interior.
